Campers on Mars

NASA have been running a competition, “The X-Hab Challenge,” between engineers to find a suitable flexible dwelling-cum-vehicle for the Martian surface. The NASA guidelines for the competition(pdf) lay down a number of criteria which basically simplify to the following requirements:

  • hard-shell prototype habitat
  • inflatable loft to deploy from hard shell
  • room enough to sleep four
  • reconfigurable as a “crew gathering” or “group meeting” area

The winning design will be put into extensive testing by NASA and might just wind up on its way to the Moon or Mars one day.

I have already submitted a prototype entry:

Homeowners give thieves a sporting chance

0

Specialist home insurer Hiscox has commissioned research which reveals that homeowners are exposing themselves by leaving valuable sports equipment, unsecured, in gardens and garages.

The goods, with an average value of £770, are left in gardens and car boots by 53% of the professionals surveyed.

More than a quarter (26%) also admitted that their gardens and outbuildings were not properly secured.

Two out of every five either do use their sporting equipment only seasonally (21%) or have not touched it for a year (19%).

Over a third (37%) are unsure whether or not their sporting goods are insured, and 15% acknowledge that they are not.

Hiscox home insurance expert Austyn Tusler explained that it was easy for homeowners to focus upon newer sports equipment, and neglect the less used, older goods at the back of sheds and garages.

The Skinny on Real Estate

When I consented to review The Skinny on Real Estate Investing, I assumed I’d be reviewing a book, and not a pamphlet illustrated by my 8-year old niece who drools a lot and still has some trouble negotiating bathroom time. This review might run longer than the book itself.

Jim Randel’s series of illustrated The Skinny on titles boasts that it’s “For Really Busy People!” It’s also suitable For Really Fidgety People who can’t get through a book longer than 10,000 words. The lengthiest passage is the introduction, which runs a full page and explains The Skinny on’s M.O. of culling swat

Making Car Insurance Claims

0

Motorists compare car insurance quotes on various websites to find a best deal. When it is the time to make a claim, they may experience a payout that is significantly lesser than what was expected. This can be very frustrating for the motorists because the promises made by the insurance company may not be kept at all.
It is important for the insurance customers to know that the companies are for- profit organizations and will make payments based on various terms such as book value, depreciation or replacement schedules. These terms may not even correlate with the practical world, just the accounting standards.

Van Insurance & General Tax

0

You may have missed this van insurance hike, or at least one that is to come in the near future, and I recently discovered that I had yet to write about it so I thought that now was as good a time as any to inform you about it just in case. Now, it is one of the very few elements of tax that has not been as bad as it was first presumed but it is still a rise nevertheless so read on to find out about it.

This concerns the 1% tax rise that applies to general tax. This includes that tax that is applied to car insurance, home insurance and van insurance. As such, it will rise in January 2011 to 6% overall. This is a very small rise considering most people were expecting it to double to 10%.
