Queensland faces new weather hit: report

New Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) data suggests this summer could see another La Nina event develop, leading to higher than average rainfall across northern and eastern Australia.

An updated bureau forecast was delivered last week to the Federal and Queensland governments, but will not be released to the public until tomorrow.

Brisbane’s Sunday Mail newspaper says the new forecast indicates that the Southern Oscillation Index, a key climate indicator, has climbed from +6 to +12 in recent weeks, although this is lower than the +25 reading recorded during the La Nina event last year.

The most recent public update from the bureau, released on October 12, says conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean “are consistent with the early stages of a late-forming La Nina event”.

It adds: “If the current cooling persists, as is expected, then 2011/12 will be recorded as the second La Nina in as many years. Current

Aviva enhances critical illness coverage

0

Health insurer Aviva has announced that it is enhancing its critical illness coverage with the addition of new conditions.

With effect from today, new critical illness customers will be eligible for partial payments for two forms of early cancer, namely low grade prostate cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ, an early form of breast cancer, for which a lump sum of up to £20,000 may be paid out.

The partial payments form an additional benefit, separate from the main policy, meaning that critical illness coverage remains in effect should the policyholder need to claim help later.

A number of other enhancements have moved Avivas critical illness coverage beyond the threshold necessary for ABI plus status, including more comprehensive coverage, increasing the number of people able to claim.

Aviva is also the first insurer to make Multiple Sclerosis (MS) an ABI plus condition, by reducing the amount of time needed for continuous symptoms to be in evidence from six to three months.

Name hospitals not on cashless list, says CIC

0

MUMBAI: The Central Information Commission has ordered that public sector health insurance companies must provide names of hospitals that do not feature in the Preferred Provider Network (PPN) for cashless services to an applicant under the Right to Information Act.

The commission has also directed insurance companies to provide reasons for taking the hospitals off the list.

In the decision dated July 27, 2011, Information Commissioner Deepak Sandhu said this information needs to be disclosed as the person may have taken a medi-claim policy on the assumption that the cashless facility will be made available to him or her in all hospitals that feature on the list provided by the company. Several news outlets this weekend covered work-based insurance issues, including reaction to the Wal-Mart announcement that it would be cutting back coverage for new part-timers and what workers in a number of places should expect as their bosses roll out policies for the coming year.

Health-Care Coverage Still Eludes Some Part-Time Workers
The news came as a shock: Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private employer, would not offer health benefits to new part-time employees, the company said Friday. But perhaps it shouldn’t have been so surprising, since the retailer was among a minority of U.S. businesses. Only

IIHS Finds Half of All Booster Seats Do Not Fit Properly

0

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated 83 booster seats. They found that around half of them do not fit children properly. It might be time to check and see how well your child’s booster seat fits, and what the IIHS thinks of it.

Booster seats are a slightly more “grown up” version of “infant seats”, or “convertible car seats”. All are designed to safely restrain babies and young children with a five-point harness. It helps to ensure the physical safety of infants and small children in case the vehicle they are riding in is involved in a traffic accident.

Usually, children who are between the ages of 4 and 8 years old need to use actual booster seats.
